Tell us about yourself.:
I am a divorce attorney and coach. I have a healthy appreciation for designer clothes, sports cars, and a good bourbon.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?:
I grew up in a small marina town called Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. My family owned businesses and I acquired a strong work ethic at an early age. I believe growing up in a public setting and conversing with people many years my senior made me more of a free-thinker and comfortable expressing myself.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not particularly other than I generally write when most people are asleep. I am most alert and creative after midnight.
What authors have influenced you?
I grew up in a small marina town called Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. My family owned businesses and I acquired a strong work ethic at an early age. Do you have any advice for new authors?
Wait.. Now you are making me contradict myself. My advice would be.. don't rush the process. Take the time to develop a work that you are proud of. It is tempting to want to make your book public as soon as possible, but you are best served by enlisting professionals to help you along the way. Quality takes time.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Never take anyone else's advice.
What are you reading now?
Because of my legal work, almost all the reading that I do is directly related to whatever issues are presenting themselves in my cases at the time. In order to get the best possible results for my clients, I always have to stay abreast of new case law. Plus, as a family law attorney, I necessarily must become an expert in many things. Every client comes with a unique set of circumstances. I'm a perpetual student improving my craft.
What’s your biggest weakness?
You should never share your weaknesses with others. They can later be used against you.
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Bible
When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
Making money and spending money. Sounds silly, but think about it, isn't that what we all do? Work and play? I believe it's important to work hard and then reward yourself for a job well done.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember what I had for lunch today.
What has inspired you and your writing style?
I want the reader to feel as though they are talking to a friend who understands them. Creativity mixed with directness.
What are you working on now?
My law practice keeps me quite busy. It can be a struggle to find much time for myself or anything else outside of that.
What is your favorite method for promoting your work?
I've always enjoyed PR and marketing. I think part of the reason that I wrote a book was because I wanted something to market. I guess you could say it's a little backward. Nevertheless, I enjoy building something from the ground up. It's always fun to see things go viral on social media and then take on a life of their own.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I just released "How to Divorce a Narcissist and Win". I own two businesses so those need my attention for the time being. No immediate plans for another release, but who knows what the future brings.
How well do you work under pressure?
Yes. I don't think that I enjoy working that way, but perhaps subconsciously, I do. I have always taken on too much.
How do you decide what tone to use with a particular piece of writing?
I don't think about it ahead of time. I just begin and it comes naturally. I think often people can get stuck if they overthink things. I know that for me, I would lose my creative energy if I tried to plan too much ahead.
If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be?
Life is short. Take a chance and pursue your dreams. Never let fear get in the way.
