Tell us about yourself.:
ohn Lander is a photographer and writer based in Japan. Having lived in Japan 30+ years with considerable knowledge about local culture, foods and his specialty: Japanese gardens. After teaching at Keio University and Tsukuba University for 25 years, John Lander turned to photography and writing travel features. At present, John is devoted almost exclusively to photography – specializing in Japanese gardens, quirky offbeat roadside attractions, onsen hot springs and Japanese festivals. Located near Kamakura on the outskirts of Tokyo & Yokohama he has easy access to both Shonan Beach and the bright lights of Tokyo. The newest book "The Shikoku Pilgrimage – Japan's Sacred Trail" is being released September 2021. Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?:
I grew up in Illinois our on the prairies, which was fine for a child but at the same time, it gave me a passionate desire to get to California or even further afield.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am more of a photographer than a writer these days – I have found that I can express myself better through photography than language

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Perserverance. Perserverance. And Perserverance.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
"choose what you do in life based on what interests you, and your life's work will feel fare more fulfilling, rather than just filling in time"

What’s your biggest weakness?
Sleepiness too much of the time.

The Anatomy of Restlessness, Bruce Chatwin
When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
Out in the field – photography subjects of interest., in particular Japanese festivals, hot springs and gardens
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I do not remember.
What has inspired you and your writing style?
The beauty of Japan.

Promoting my newest book The Shikoku Pilgrimage – Japan's Sacred Trail

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am now pitching book project on Hidden Gardens of Tokyo, since the majority of them are focused on Kyoto
How well do you work under pressure?
Not well at all.
How do you decide what tone to use with a particular piece of writing?
Writing captions for photo books is fairly straightforward, the key is brevity.
If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be?
Despite all the ugly, there ARE many beautiful things left in this world. Believe it.
