Tell us about yourself.:
I am an Irish writer and poet living on Vancouver Island with my husband and young son. We fill our days walking the beach, eating cinnamon rolls, and hosting friends.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?:
I was born in Wales, the UK but spent most of my life in Ireland and Germany. I immigrated to Canada in 2019 before we had our son. I feel that being a third-culture child has given me a unique cultural lens and my experience as an immigrant has heavily influenced my poetry.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to get up early in the morning while it's still dark, make a fresh cup of coffee, and write until everyone's awake. It's helpful to get the words out first thing so that I can be more present the rest of the day. I find that if I don't spill my words and thoughts onto a page they tend to build up inside and distract me.
What authors have influenced you?
I was born in Wales, the UK but spent most of my life in Ireland and Germany. I immigrated to Canada in 2019 before we had our son. I feel that being a third-culture child has given me a unique cultural lens and my experience as an immigrant has heavily influenced my poetry.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Not to be afraid of their own writing style. Don't try to fit in. Do your own thing. Don't let fear or anxiety stop you from living passionately and writing boldly.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Write the book you want to read. I'm sure every writer has heard that quote at some point but it's true. if you love what you write you'll be more motivated to finish!
What are you reading now?
Currently, I'm reading a lot of Susan Musgraves and Rupi Kaur poetry.
What’s your biggest weakness?
I tend to fixate on things. The upside is that projects get finished very quickly but the downside is that I can abandon all else in my pursuit of that one thing. I'm working on finding a healthy balance.
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Bible
When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
I walk the beach a lot with my son and enjoy cooking.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't but Narnia was one of my earliest favorites and my introduction to fiction and fantasy.
What has inspired you and your writing style?
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry has been very influential in my writing. I like how he has fun with the characters he's created and doesn't feel the need to explain or justify everything. He's bold in telling it exactly how he wants to.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I am working on a visual poetry book to be released this year. I enjoy trying new things and pushing my own boundaries. The combination of visual art and poetry will add deeper layers to the overall message I hope to share through it.
What is your favorite method for promoting your work?
I enjoy sharing my work in personal ways; with friends or family, open readings and mics, workshops, and social media. I like it when an author's style is personal and reflected across their marketing.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have several manuscripts collecting dust that I hope to breath new life into.
How well do you work under pressure?
I work very well but it does tend to stress me out a little so I don't leave things to just before their deadlines.
How do you decide what tone to use with a particular piece of writing?
The story seems to almost write itself and so I don't often have to stop to ask myself these questions. For me, loving the stories I tell through my work gives it a life of its own and doesn't need to be forced or examined too much.
If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be?
Life inspires art. Fill your life with passion, experiences, and love and it will spill over into your creativity. Live boldly, create often.
