Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My career has primarily been in the “eye care” world. I have also slung hash and liquor, saved freezing dogs, held blood donors’ hair while they puked in a bucket, and now I write. I am an author who writes Women’s Fiction, Thrillers, Contemporary, and Romantic Thrillers. My dogs beckon me for pee breaks, and ask me to smell the roses on our adventures to help me to become a better writer. I live with my beloved husband, John, and our five pets in the secluded hills of north central Pennsylvania.
I have written three books, "A Long Legged Life," "A Leg Up," & "On Her Last Leg." These are Women's Fiction, Thriller, and Romantic Thriller respectively. I had major surgery last year and took advantage of my 'down time' by writing novels. It was my baby sister's idea, "ya outta write a book!" So, I wrote three so far.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
"A Long Legged Life" just released today, April 3rd, 2017. Eva Kenier, my main character, is also undergoing major surgery, but her life depends on it. She is watching her life pass before her eyes in a dream sequence while under anesthesia. This is both cathartic and introspective to her as she comes out of it. She spent long periods of her life walking on egg shells, but now she owns the tragedy to triumphs she remembered–not afraid to disappoint. She is not afraid. Now, if only this journey will continue?
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, my best writing is from 7:00 am to 11:00 am. I am definitely a morning person. I turn on 'Soundscapes' on the TV, and my dogs go into their trance as I work. I have three rescue dogs and two rescued kitties, all with me 24/7. They know the special bell as my computer shuts down, and they know that means LONG WALK.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Light Between Oceans–vivid descriptions of cold, wind, solitude
The Girl on the Train–guttural feelings…she just can't help herself
The Book Thief–depth, sacrifice, you don't want her to get caught!
Ken Follett's stuff because of the research and knowledge he puts forth in complex specialties like architecture
What are you working on now?
I am working on book #4 in the Legs of Life series "A Three-Legged Race." If I change my agenda, I may choose to make this a stand alone called "Taking the Dread Out of Deirdre."
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am so new to this, and literally had my three hour release party on Facebook only a couple hours ago. I love Twitter as I just learned it. I think joining groups on Facebook and having your Author like and follow pages is important. I am too new and discovering all the other amazing things out there that will benefit me when I am less ignorant. Stuff like Thunderclap. I said, "Thunder WHAT?" Our friends and families in our warmest market with word of mouth will probably always be the iron-clad way to go.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be humble.
Everyone has a story whether it is on the written page, or not. This deserves respect as it could be a battle they are fighting. Everyone's time is just as valuable as mine, and I try to always remember this when I engage with anyone–stranger or friend. Value yourself. Be confident, and keep working. You are only as good as the effort you put in and the people you surround yourself with.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I used it in chapter four in "A Long Legged Life…" A dear friend of mine told me three years ago, and this is not an exact quote,
You cannot control the last second of your life–poof! It is gone.
You cannot truly predict the next second of time, but you can control the second you are in RIGHT NOW–so make it count. Make it a good one!
What are you reading now?
I am reading a weird mix; Diana Gabaldon, Bill O'Reiley, and Randy Blythe
What’s next for you as a writer?
To learn the industry; explore; weed out what really works, and KEEP WRITING
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Book Thief
