Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a research scientist working in Bioinformatics, who likes to write in his spare time. I have written two books so far, both science fiction comedies. The first, The Ultimate Inferior Beings, was written on my own (with a little help from a friend) many, many years ago. The second, more recent book, The Worst Man on Mars, was co-written with Corben Duke.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I don't know what inspired The Worst Man on Mars. It was my co-author's idea. He said: "Let's write a book about a British mission to colonize Mars. A team of robots have been sent ahead to build the base, but they turn out to be incompetent and make a pig's ear of it. The crew are a mish-mash of useless types. Oh, and there's life on Mars. But not what you might think."
I said, "Sounds like a good idea. Let's do it."
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My co-author and I have never met in person. All our writing is done by exchange of e-mails and occasional insults.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The biggest influences have been Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins and Douglas Adams.
What are you working on now?
We're putting together a collection of short stories, all sci-fi humour.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
We've found that the best method of promotion, by far, is a BookBub featured deal – if you're lucky enough to get it. Beats everything else we've tried by miles.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
"When the fun stops, stop."
This actually comes from UK TV ads for gambling apps, but has wide applicability. 🙂
It certainly applies to writing.
What are you reading now?
I am about to start reading The Intrusions by Stav Sherez which has had a lot of great reviews.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I'll keep it going as a hobby, so long as it stays fun. No great plans for world domination.
What is your favorite book of all time?
David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. A joy to read, from start to finish.
