About Only the Lucky Grow Old:
I have been a physical therapist for over 32 years and have always enjoyed working with the elderly and the stories they share. I always thought how neat it would be for some of their stories be told in a book.
The book primarily is comprised of interviews I had with 22 individuals over the age of 90. We discuss what life was like growing up so long ago, and follow their lives through to present day. They share insight on life, faith and longevity, and I found their stories fascinating as well as inspirational. The people I met with were amazing, and as I documented their stories, I tried to make their interviews come to life on paper, so you get to know their personalities as I had. The simplicity of what life was like has been lost, and I think people forget, or perhaps weren’t aware, of how different and simple life used to be.
Unlike kids of today, this generation asked for and expected little. There was no sense of entitlement, and day to day life was about contributing to the family in whatever capacity was asked of them…which they seemed to do without complaints. They accepted their childhoods just as they were. Many of these individuals had none, having to work for the household from a young age. Many had to stop attending school to work, and many were never able to graduate high school. Few went to college, and many enlisted to serve our country as young as age 17. Some of the hardships they endured you may find heartbreaking, and their insight on various topics interesting.
What would a tale of one’s life be like without including those of love? Some stories of falling in love couldn’t have been scripted any better. I know they will warm your heart as they did mine.
I find the grounding of faith invaluable, and between all the stories I have a phrase, quote, saying, or biblical verse that means something special to me.
Woven throughout the stories, I add personal thoughts of my own on a variety of topics, and at times stories told brought back memories of my own I share with the reader. Some are meant to make you stop and think about your own life and views, while others are light intended to make you smile.
Being a physical therapist for 34 years I share much of what I have learned regarding aging and arthritis. In the preface I take the opportunity to offer insight on those topics and what you can do to maintain independence, mobility and function as you move into and through your ‘Golden Years’. The ‘arthritis’ word gets tossed around way too often and way too fast. People lose hope when they hear that word…but that does not need to be the case.
I would like to think my book unique in many regards, and it is my hope that you will have found reading it a good way to have spent your time. May it leave you feeling uplifted, but even more importantly, may you find a renewed admiration and respect for our elderly.

Author Bio:
I have been a Physical Therapist for 34 years and love what I do. I have worked as an outpatient therapist throughout my career, and have always enjoyed working with the elderly population. I love the stories they share about their lives, as well as their outlooks and wisdom. I had a fleeting thought one day about how neat it would be to have their stories recorded, but initially ignored it.
I have always enjoyed creative writing, but never had any desire to be an author…until about 4 years ago. The thought about creating a book out of the stories shared became something I found myself thinking more and more about. So much so that I finally made the decision to undertake the task of writing this book.
One day I was sitting reading the Sunday paper and the man who would become my first interview was featured in an article. I found the article about his life fascinating, and said to myself should I begin the project, he would definitely be someone i would like to speak with. His is the first story featured in the book.
The book is written with meaning, heart and sincerity. I have learned much in my years as a therapist and would like to share some of that with all of you. The book is meant to make you think and reflect, but also to provide, hopefully, a sense of peace and appreciation.
I am not an avid reader myself, but love the art of baking, and I love to garden. I do consider myself an avid conversationalist-interpret that how you would like 🙂
I believe in living a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise being essential, as well as the grounding that spirituality provides.
I welcome any questions and hope you find my book interesting enough to read. If so, I welcome any thoughts you may have.
