Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi! I am a writer of short fiction and novels. I currently live in Calgary, Alberta. I've written one novel so far, although I am hard at work on my second book.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
All But What's Left was inspired by a writing prompt that asked students to start a story with the sentence, "Get the gun." Many, many years later, this is still the first sentence in All But What's Left.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to binge write. I will sit down for 8 hours straight and write like a crazy person. I know lots of other authors write a little bit each day, but once I get into a book I find it hard to take breaks. This requires some planning, of course; I need a quiet space and a clear calendar to pull these writing binges off.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favourite authors are wide ranging. I love Diana Gabaldon and the Outlander series, but I also have a weakness for Romance, Magic Realism, Literary Fiction and many other genres. My favourite books of the past two years have been The Alice Network by Kate Quinn and Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. Oh, and the Rubgy book romance series by L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid.
What are you working on now?
This summer I am working on the first draft of my second novel. It's another work of Women's Fiction, set in the early 2000s. It's about a group of friends who come together at a cottage three years after the death of one of their group members to reconnect.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Hmm I do a lot of promotion, but I'd have to say Amazon ads have been the most effective thus far.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Submit your work! I have been submitting short stories for many, many years. If you are rejected (and we all are), you will learn how to manage it. And if you get accepted, you'll have a writing credit to your name. The more you get yourself out there the more you will feel like a "real writer".
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Not everyone is going to like your work. Some people won't read in your genre, or they won't agree with your characters or plot, or they just plain old won't like your style. That's okay. This is part of art. If everyone likes it, you're doing something wrong.
What are you reading now?
I have three books on the go: The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon; The Cleaner by Mark Dawson; and The Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am going to complete my second novel while sneaking in a few more short stories. My goal is to publish novel two in early 2019.
What is your favorite book of all time?
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez
