Tell us about yourself.:
First-time author, a former paralegal whose only previous writing was legal memorandums. My book is about the anxiety and exhilaration of travel.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?:
I grew up in the small-town, landlocked Midwest. I was always eager to escape my town and, using books, I traveled the world.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I play my playlist favorites on Alexa from the minute I sit down to write until I quit. It is fair to say this book would not have been written without Alexa!
What authors have influenced you?
I grew up in the small-town, landlocked Midwest. I was always eager to escape my town and, using books, I traveled the world.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just sit and write, knowing your first (second and third) drafts will be crap. It gets better.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
I can't think of a single bit of advice I've ever been given. Probably I assumed I knew what I was doing and didn't listen.
What are you reading now?
The Good Earth by Pearl Buck for my book club. Amazingly good for an old book. I am hooked on the characters and get anxious when I see they are going astray.
What’s your biggest weakness?
Impatience.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Impossible question! ….. A Thousand Days in Venice by Marlena De Blasi
When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
Reading, traveling, hanging with family and friends, trying new restaurants, bike rides, camping.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I read and re-read a book about Anne Boleyn as a middle schooler that became tattered.
What has inspired you and your writing style?
When I write I am almost having a conversation with myself. I can picture the story in my head and just need to write it down and then tweak it (endlessly). Inspired by? Any book with good plot and characters.
What are you working on now?
Book promotion. I was shocked to learn promotion takes as much time as writing an entire book.
What is your favorite method for promoting your work?
I am looking forward to having my book club read my book as its monthly selection but otherwise, promotion is a lot of time on the computer. Not my favorite.
What’s next for you as a writer?
More traveling! After one travel book, I can't wait to leave quarantine behind and gather more material for a second book.
How well do you work under pressure?
Not well. My antidote to pressure is–lists. When my head is about to explode from too many angles, ideas, and possibilities I write them all down
How do you decide what tone to use with a particular piece of writing?
I try and remember what my "theme" is or what direction I want to take the reader. Is this bit funny or serious or something that I will mention later in more detail? That guides the tone.
If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be?
We've seen this last year how unpredictable life is. I've resolved to live life NOW, no more waiting.
