Author Interview: Joseph Wood

Tell us about yourself.:
Hello! My name is Joseph Wood, and I am the author of The Dawn of Speech. I love reading, writing, and watching shows. My favorite shows would have to be Friends, HIMYM, and Psych. My favorite book series would be The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. I started writing poetry because it was kind of a personal journal for me. Now I write poetry so that others can connect to the words and know that they're not alone.

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?:
I've grown up in a few different places including Massachusetts, Mississippi, and Arizona. This really gave me different cultures and ways to look at life. This influenced my writing by helping me to write something that many people can relate to.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I'm trying to think of a line for my poetry, sometimes I'll cover my ears with my hands to try and block out all the noise and just focus on what I want the line to depict.

What authors have influenced you?
I've grown up in a few different places including Massachusetts, Mississippi, and Arizona. This really gave me different cultures and ways to look at life. This influenced my writing by helping me to write something that many people can relate to.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
It's scary to put out your writing because it feels like a piece of yourself. You've got to just do it. Also, before you publish anything, make sure you have a plan of action.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Never apologize for being you.

What are you reading now?
Dune by Frank Herbert.

What’s your biggest weakness?
I don't plan out what I want to do enough.

What is your favorite book of all time?
It's got to be The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. It's so good.

When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
I like to go running, watch some shows, sing, and have existential life crises.

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I really remember reading was Harry Potter. I remember being a little kid and wishing I could be in a world of magic. Those books really started me on the path of loving to read and be immersed in a different world.

What has inspired you and your writing style?
Looking back on the things that both myself and those around me have gone through has really inspired my writing. My writing style has evolved as I worked with rhymes and loving the way rhymes sound.

What are you working on now?
I'm currently working on a little collection of 10 poems that I've titled "The Story as it goes." It's a working title.

What is your favorite method for promoting your work?
I like finding people on Fiverr that seem to know what they're doing.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I'd like to start working on a larger collection of poems about spirituality.

How well do you work under pressure?
I'd like to think I do well under pressure. That's usually how I work.

How do you decide what tone to use with a particular piece of writing?
I usually use what mood I'm in to affect the tone of a piece.

If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be?
I hope that you can connect to The Dawn of Speech and really enjoy it!
