Tell us about yourself.:
I'm a bestselling author, award-winning ghostwriter, and book coach for first-time nonfiction authors. For more than 20 years, I've ghostwritten dozens of books and copyedited hundreds of nonfiction books. As a book coach I've guided countless new authors to write and publish their book, some to bestseller status. I'm also a long-time instructor for the University of California, teaching classes in the creative writing and copyediting certificate programs. I wrote "Your Fabulous First Book" to guarantee that new authors would have all the essential preparation to write their own fabulous first book. I have many more books in the pipeline including a workbook to follow my book and an online course.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?:
I grew up in New York City. It influenced my writing because I hated living there and used reading and writing to escape.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
None other than having too many book ideas and not enough hours to write them all.
What authors have influenced you?
I grew up in New York City. It influenced my writing because I hated living there and used reading and writing to escape.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Focus. Schedule time in your calendar to write. Get support, coaching, and/or accountability. Get feedback. Be open to improving your craft. Take classes and read books. Learn all you can about marketing; it's as far from writing as it can be, but essential if you want to sell what you write.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Write what you know.
What are you reading now?
Alice Hoffman, Deepak Chopra, Danielle Steel. I have diverse interests in both fiction and nonfiction and read about four books/week both in print and CDs in my car.
What’s your biggest weakness?
Distractions! Emails, free webinars, the garden, the cat, food, friends, napping, too many high priorities on my to-do list!
What is your favorite book of all time?
I really loved "Ready Player One" but didn't love the movie.
When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
Reading, doing crafts, gardening, visiting friends, cooking, taking courses.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I was a big Dr. Seuss fan as a child.
What has inspired you and your writing style?
I write what I know. I've been a book coach and writing teacher for years so I love to combine writing and teaching. My first few books will be on that subject. A few years down the road I plan to write a few books on personal growth and spirituality, two topics I've been immersed in for 40+ years.
What are you working on now?
"Your Fabulous First Book Workbook" which will be published shortly. After that hopefully an online course. Then I'm about 1/3 into my book tentatively titled "How to Build a Business Around Your Book."
What is your favorite method for promoting your work?
Online promotional sites like this one helped me "sell" over 1,000 books the first week of my launch. Mostly they were free but it was still a good showing and got me #1 in nine categories.
What’s next for you as a writer?
"Your Fabulous First Book Workbook" should be published in May. Then I'll develop a course on the subject.
How well do you work under pressure?
I don't like pressure; I prefer to set my own timelines. I don't care to create too much stress in my life. Not good for mental or physical health.
How do you decide what tone to use with a particular piece of writing?
I clarify my ideal readers and write as if I'm talking directly to them. So my books are conversational and instructional, in a friendly manner.
If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be?
Be absolutely sure you want to write a book, because it's not easy. Be clear about WHY you want to write a book and WHO you expect to read it. Then be sure you're willing to put in the time it takes to write and publish, and then market your baby!
