Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
As Sylvia Damsell, which is a pen name, I have written four Christian historical mail order bride novels and am currently writing the fifth one. Another pen name of mine is Elise Robbins and I have written seven historical novels under that name which are clean reads but not specifically Christian. The name under which I also write is Sylvia Wheatley. Sylvia Wheatley writes Christian historical novels, time travel novels and other novels, also commentaries on different books in the Bible and one self help book.
I really enjoy writing and have done so since I can remember. I also like music, walking, travel and particularly for research into my books. Since receiving Jesus into my life at the age of nine I have loved the Bible and went to theological college at an early age. Since then I have done secretarial work, nursed and taught nursing. I have also been a chiropodist. Now my main work is writing.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest mail order novel is 'Bride From Princeton.' I find the nineteenth century fascinating. It was not glamorous. Life was hard for many people. However, many overcame the difficulties and fought for a good life. Maybe that is the inspiration.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I just sit at my typewriter and type. Because I touch type I can keep up with my thoughts. I do not plan what it going to happen. I just let it come about and find that exciting because I have no idea often what is coming next. It just comes. I then read it a few times after it is finished and add things or take things away.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The most important Book I have ever read and keep reading is the Bible. It is full of history, poetry, stories and spiritual truths. It is God speaking to us. Other writers whose books I have enjoyed or been inspired by are Watchman Nee and Evelyn Antony, Current writers of mail order bride novels I really enjoy are Nerys Leigh and Jan Holly.
What are you working on now?
I'm finishing 'Bride From Princeton' which is currently on pre-order and am hoping to do one more in the series set in the Lone Pine vicinity, plus an extra one which I am also working on about the minister and his wife who feature in all five books.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I advertise on various sites which includes facebook. My website as Sylvia Damsell is http://sylviadamsell.wixsite.com/mysite.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the way you feel most comfortable with. Spend ages editing and trying to get rid of spelling mistakes. Do your research carefully. If you're not happy about doing those things pay an editor. You want your book to be the best it can be. However, don't spend so much money on these things that you make nothing out of it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don't poke your finger in a plug socket. It may terminate a writing career.
What are you reading now?
I am correcting my books and reading quite a few ebooks when I have time.
