Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Ruby Blaylock is the pen name of author Jessica B. Woods. ‘Ruby’ has penned two cozy mystery books in the Carly Keene Cozy Mystery series and she has another book in the series coming out in early December.
She has been a writer her entire life, but only began her self-publishing journey after her youngest daughter was born. She loves spending time with her three kids, two cats, three dogs, guinea pig, and her husband, The Englishman.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Her latest book, “Love, Death & Christmas Cookies,” is the third in her Carly Keene Cozy Mystery series. Just like her other books, it was inspired by the characters that filled her life as she grew up in a small, southern town in Georgia.
Readers can expect lots of gossip, good food and southern sassiness from her quirky characters as well as a healthy dose of mystery.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Occasionally known to type with a guinea pig on one shoulder.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love reading books by other cozy mystery writers as well as in other genres. If you like my books, you’ll love Constance Barker’s books and Leighann Dobbs…they are both awesome storytellers!
What are you working on now?
Putting the finishing touches on a Christmas cozy and getting ready to outline the next one!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Write good stories, then find people who enjoy reading in the genre. I care most about making sure people enjoy themselves when they read one of my books. It’s one of the great pleasures in life!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stick with it, and don’t quit your day job. It takes a long time to make money from self-publishing, but persistence, hard work and the willingness to learn new things will pay off.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep writing and learn to market yourself. Even the best books in the world need someone to market them.
What are you reading now?
Just picked up Cinder, a YA fantasy by Marissa Meyer.
What’s next for you as a writer?
More cozy mysteries for Ruby Blaylock, a new YA fantasy novel by Jessica B. Woods, and then Ruby is going to maybe tackle some light romance with a hefty dose of southern humor.
What is your favorite book of all time?
That’s just not a fair question! I love so many of them…across so many genres…all of them!
