Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a Samhain Publishing author of kinky new adult and hot contemporary BDSM romance. I’ve written three books, one which is out currently and two that are coming out later this year. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English with a double concentration in Creative Writing and Literary Comparison, as well as a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education, both of which seemed like good ideas at the time. I’ve stumbled through careers in entertainment, publishing, law and teaching, before finally returning to my first love: writing. I’m a self-admitted caffeine addict and gym rat, and currently live in upstate New York with my husband, two parakeets, and a cat with a very unusual foot fetish.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Hierarchy of Needs is my latest book, the second book in my Portland Rebels series, due out on July 7, 2015. The inspiration came from the characters themselves, who appeared in my first book, The Duality Principle. Jamie and Dean were the kind of secondary characters who had a story, I just wasn’t sure what, until a little experimental scene I wrote of the two of them on a beach had them revealing their friends-to-lovers and back again storyline.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I usually write with a hooded sweatshirt on, no matter what the season. Something about being tucked into a hood helps keep me in my crazy little world.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The first book that heavily influenced me was called The Distance from the Heart of Things by Ashley Warlick. It’s the story of a young girl coming home to her family after years away at college, and learning how she fit among them again. I also adore anything Maggie Stiefvater writes; that woman makes magic with words and sensory images, and Shiver is one of my favorites. I didn’t start reading erotic romance until a friend introduced me to a book Darcy and Elizabeth by Linda Berdoll. I adore books that can find a way to encompass elements I loved in those three books: beautiful language, characters I can relate to, and sexy scenes that get dog-eared from being read over and over again.
What are you working on now?
Currently I am finishing up edits to my first novel, His Contract, which will be released by Samhain in November. It’s the first in my Legally Bound series, and also my first book to be offered in print!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Word of mouth seems to be the best method! Promoting across as many blogs as I can, and along as many social media outlets as well, is my approach.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep swimming.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
See above. 😉
What are you reading now?
Currently I’m reading Beyond Innocence by Kit Rocha.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Next up for me is the third book in my Portland Rebels series, The Theory of Deviance. It is slotted to be out next summer.
What is your favorite book of all time?
This is a painful question to answer, because there are so many books I love in so many different ways. If I had to pick one, though, it would be Harry Potter, because that series drew me into another world like nothing else ever has before or since.
