Frankie Turk and Lola Lahti are two Chicago Police detectives who were suspended for using excessive violence in the pursuit of justice. So they find themselves out of work and money. In Chicago, the police protect their own through a private investigative agency known as Taylor Street. It was originally formed during the Great Depression and Prohibition. It was conceived by Tug Collier, an American assassin and spy during WWI. He went on over a hundred missions. When he came home after the War, he formed a fund to help suspended detectives and euphemistically called it The Widows & Orphans Fund, a term for graft in Chicago.
Frankie and Lola land on their feet and start new careers as
private investigators who are off the radar. Their first client
is a young heiress whose husband was murdered, and the police department has closed the investigation, and Frankie
and Lola gain a wealthy client.
The Chicago Tribune Reviewer, Rick Kogan, said “the dialogue
is snappy, the characters — good and bad — appealing, the story full of humor. “
