Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in South Minneapolis with my partner, daughter, and gremlin cat. I’ve written five books: Swinging on the Garden Gate: A Spiritual Memoir (Skinner House Books), Writing the Sacred Journey: The Art and Practice of Spiritual Memoir (Skinner House Books), On the Threshold: Home, Hardwood, and Holiness (Westview Press), the novel, Hannah, Delivered (Koehler Books), and a book on revision. You can connect with me at www.spiritualmemoir.com and www.elizabethjarrettandrew.com.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
HANNAH, DELIVERED was inspired by my sister, who practices homebirth midwifery in northern New Mexico. I find midwives to be very wise, real people, and I wanted to explore how their spiritual wisdom might apply to contemporary life.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I drink lots of tea.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a huge fan of Marilynne Robinson. I’ve also been very influenced by James Baldwin, Annie Dillard, Toni Morrison, Virginia Woolf, and so many others…
What are you working on now?
I’m finishing up a craft book on the connection between revising a manuscript and revising the way we see the world.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write lots. Read lots. Find community.
