Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in North Carolina and have worked in the legal field here since 2000. Scout’s Honor is my first novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Scout’s Honor is the title of my book. I wrote this book for all the young girls out there who have been taken advantage of by an older man in a position of trust and who have struggled, sometimes their entire lives, to reclaim their honor.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think that any of my writing habits are particularly unusual.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite books and writers include Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, all of the books by Malcolm Gladwell, Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, all of the Harry Potter books, My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, and classics such as Wuthering Heights, A Separate Peace, and The Old Man and the Sea. I also love Robert Frost poetry.
What are you working on now?
I am working on two new novels: one is about a young criminal defense lawyer, with a dark secret, who falls in love with a widowed single mother and becomes a step father. Tragedy strikes and the reader will be left to wonder, what makes a father? The second one is about a teenaged girl from North Carolina who meets a Scottish boy and accompanies him on his Gap Year travels, which helps her heal from a childhood tragedy.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use all the main social media outlets as well as my website, trying to interact with other authors and readers. I also do giveaways on Good Reads and Amazon.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Forget the rules and just write. Also, if you want to get published, approach small independent publishing houses who will read your manuscript.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I have ever heard is recently attributed to Helen Mirren. It is, “If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be to use the words ‘fuck off’ much more frequently.”
What are you reading now?
I just finished a new book, coming out on May 17th, called Antiartists by Ralph Pullins, a debut independent author signed with Pen Name Publishing. I am starting another Pen Name Publishing book, The Before Now and After Then by Peter Monn.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I will continue to promote my book, write my novels and also submit my poetry.
What is your favorite book of all time?
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
