Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
So, this is where you talk about yourself and honestly I’m pretty terrible at that. I’m better at telling stories about other people, which is why I always wanted to be a writer. I love reading beautiful words and I love creating beautiful words even more. I’m newly 30, married to my highschool sweetheart and have the two most quirky and inventive little boys on this planet. I wrote my first book Fighting Attraction after a night of too much wine and wild girl talk and finished it in just a few months before submitting it for publishing. I’m currently writing the sequel to it as well as a couple of other stories.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my book is Fighting Attraction and I was inspired by many things when I came up with the story. I tried to picture in my head many of my favorite ‘book boyfriends’ and put all the traits and characteristics I loved into my perfect male lead. I wanted something that was wild and extraordinary but still within the realm of believability.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I take every opportunity I have to sit down and write. Whether it’s 5 minutes or 5 hours. I go from my laptop to my notebooks to my desktop. Just however I can squeeze it into my day/night.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Sylvia Day and The writing duo Christina Lauren. The seriousness from Sylvia’s books and the quirkiness from Chriatina Lauren. I’m also a big poetry lover as well though and absolutely adore Sylvia Plath’s writings. I love books by women who have flipped society the bird and allow other women to express ourselves as well.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m currently finishing the second book in the Fighting Attraction series and working on a book about two strangers from entirely different backgrounds who have fall in love at first sight. I’m also writing a detective book based in Memphis, Tn with southern attitude.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m on Twitter @dklawsan, Facebook D K Lawsan, and Instagram @donnnakls
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Being that I AM a new author myself, I would just say to surround yourself with people who know what the hell they are doing and pay close attention! Stick to your gut, but take the considerations of those who’ve been down this path before.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I was feeling nervous about how people who knew me would react when they found out I wrote a racy book and I was allowing it to really bother me. A fellow author who I had been conversing with straight up told me “If it matters to you, if it makes you feel good, then screw what they think.”
What are you reading now?
I just finished Shadow Lover by Anne Stuart and Hollywood Royalty by T.S. MCKinney. Both were fantastic reads!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Growing, learning and exploring. I want to connect with people and write stories that make the readers laugh and cry and feel good when they put it down. It’s important for me to have a bond with readers, being one myself as well.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Favorite book of all time, hands down is Now You See Me by Sharon Bolton. Followed closely by all things Harry Potter and Anne Stuart.
