Rachel Ashford has it all. She’s been raised in an affluent world of elegance and comfort. Intelligent and driven, Rachel was never a party-animal like many of her friends. Instead, she worked hard and graduated from Yale law school. Following the plans her parents’ had set out for her, she joined her father’s large New Jersey law firm, and seemed set to rise up the career ladder on merit rather than nepotism. However, Rachel starts to question the course of her life. And when she discovers her parents are all set to fix her up with a man of their choosing, she realizes that she longs for a very different existence than the one her mom and dad have always wanted for her.
In a drastic shift, she ditches her promising career and moves to New York City, where she trains to be a cop. Free for the very first time to do as she pleases, she relishes her new existence and the opportunity to have casual flings, dance ’til dawn and enjoy life as she never has before. What’s more, she loves her new job; the opportunity to make a difference in the world, and to really help people who are worthy of help.
However, things take an unpleasant turn when a routine call to a house break-in goes wrong, and her partner is shot. As Rachel waits anxiously in the hospital, she’s approached by a friendly paramedic. When she bumps into the man again several weeks later after a visit with her recuperating partner, the paramedic introduces himself as Jeff and asks her out.
Used to not getting in too deep, Rachel tries to fight her growing feelings for Jeff, who lives in a poor neighborhood in Brooklyn. She knows if he learns of her much more luxurious upbringing, she may lose him. Eventually, though, unable to deny that he means more to her than the casual flings that have come before, she confesses the truth about her past. Little does she know that Jeff has been keeping a secret of his own.
