Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
All about loving God, I’m a Christian hybrid author which means I’ve been traditionally published by 5 houses including Simon and Schuster as well as independently–publishing my own titles. My January 2016 release JUST KIN (available Dec.2015 for pre-order) will be my twenty-fourth book.
Currently, I have four series going: the historical Christian ‘Texas Romance’; contemporary ‘Red River Romance’; The Generations, my Biblical fiction, and the newest Days of Dread Trilogy for mid-grade readers. I love praising with new songs the Lord gives me and pray each story gives God glory! In 2008, my high school sweetheart-husband Ron moved us from the DFW area—home for fifty-plus years—to the woods of Red River County. I count four children and sixteen grandsugars my life’s biggest blessings, believing all good things come from the Lord. Besides glorifying Him, I hope every title will minister His love, mercy, and grace to its readers. I live with my husband Ron and two grandsons in Clarksville, the county seat, in the far northeast corner of the Lone Star State I love.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
JUST KIN, book six in the historical Texas Romance series is an ongoing installment to this epic family saga set in Texas. It began in 1832 with book one VOW UNBROKEN and the romance between Susannah Baylor and Henry Buckmeyer. In book two HEARTS STOLEN, 1839-1844, readers met four-year-old Charley Nightingale, and now it’s 1861. Charley’s grown and off to fight in the Civil War. The theme of Just Kin is Love covers a multitude of sin.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well, not unusual to me 🙂 I start at page one, chapter one and write straight through to The End. No outlining, no character profiles–although I have provided that after the books in the Texas Romance series have been written to help readers keep up, especially if they begin in the middle of the series. Each book is definitely a stand alone, but the consensus is, they’re most enjoyable if read in order.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oh so many, but one of my favorite authors is Bodie Thoene who wrote the first Christian fiction that I read–or should I say gobbled up? All of her series! She took me to Israel and her historic detial taught me so much through her stories.
What are you working on now?
Book seven of the Texas Romances AT LIBERTY TO LOVE that begins in 1865. Also, I’m working now on book two in the Days of Dread Trilogy THE SIXTH TRUMPET. It’s a mid-grade series, but grandparents are loving it, too. Its book one THE KING’S HIGHWAY and book three is THE KIDRON VALLEY–an end time scenario.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
By far, my favorite promotion tool is BookBub. My fourth is coming up in January. I have an author’s page there readers can follow. Then Ereaders News Today is a good option. I continue trying several other companies looking for those that rise to the top with good return on investment ratios. I also use social media, posting on facebook. My author page is http://www.facebook.com/CarylMcAdoo.author And of course, I have The Caryler, my quarterly newsletter readers can subscribe to at my website http://www.CarylMcAdoo.com to keep up with all my sales and new releases.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Learn your craft! Get involved in a good read-and-critique group and study it all until you understand the tools available to you –like point of view, show don’t tell, active voice, scene and sequel, characterization, and writing natural dialogue. Last June I released STORY & STYLE, The Craft of Writing Creative Fiction that I get rave reviews on. So many have told me how much it’s helped them which thrills my heart! That’s why I wrote it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Only God writes in stone. The rest of us rewrite!
What are you reading now?
Mostly just Scripture.
What’s next for you as a writer?
YouTube! I’m getting a video camera and about to learn how to use video to help promote my books AND my songs! The Lord gives me lots of new songs. Some go along with the books…like “Angels Unaware” and “Days of Trouble” for THE KING’S HIGHWAY. I also have praise and worship songs, many I worked into a contemporary Red River Romance SING A NEW SONG. And also an anointed lullaby that truly puts babies to sleep. So besides books, I write songs.
What is your favorite book of all time?
NO question about that, God’s Living Word, The Holy Bible.
