Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I'm the author of several books and short stories for kids and teens. Included in the awards my books have won are the ALA Recommended Book for Reluctant Readers, IRA/CBC Children’s Choice and EPIC Best YA Novel Finalist.
I grew up in Connecticut, where she graduated from The Morgan School and Quinnipiac University. I now live in Oregon. While I misse the East Coast, especially houses built before 1900, I enjoy the green valleys, fresh air and low humidity in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is The Ugly Girl Party, and it was inspired by a girl who was invited to a party that turned out to be only for "ugly" girls.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write by the seat of my pants–that is, I don't outline. While I know what the beginning and end of a story will be, I make it up as I go along.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Judy Blume and Sarah Dessen.
What are you working on now?
I'm working on a tween novel. I don' like to talk about books much as I'm writing, as it can spoil the process for me.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I've found there is no one best way. I use the web and I promote in person too at group booksignings.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stick with it. Don't give up after the first rejection or the fiftieth.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
What are you reading now?
I'm into non-fiction at the moment and am reading Robert Kennedy: A Raging Spirit.
What’s next for you as a writer?
To keep on writing.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I can't choose one book. Favorites rang from Gone With the Wind to All Creatures Great and Small.
